Essay on The Columbine Massacre - 1977 Words

During the past decade, America has witnessed a rise in mass murders carried out by youth leaving parents, teachers and school officials scrambling to figure out the motive behind such attacks. The 1999 massacre at Columbine High School was a watershed moment in American history that offered, besides grief and sorrow for lost loved ones, clues as to how to prevent copycat massacres at school campuses in the future. Theories abound in the hopes of explaining why Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold killed 12 and injured 21 others, yet very few hold true as time progresses and other massacres unfold. Modern-day schools have atmospheres that foster bullying and a divided social class system. The attacks perpetrated by Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold†¦show more content†¦The line specifically, â€Å"who have chosen not to accept me, who have treated me like I am not worth their time are dead† suggests a sense of detachment from the larger body of students that led to being ridicu led and the subsequent decision to murder those who chose to not accept him. Not being accepted is a common element in any case of bullying; something about Harris and Klebold set them apart from their peers so much that it enabled the jeers and ridicule they were subjected to during their time at Columbine High School which, in turn, led Eric Harris to ultimately seek out revenge. According to Cindy Beltz’s research on the Columbine High School massacre, Harris and Klebold were taunted daily at school: Here one can see that the boys lived a nightmare as they were humiliated and forced to live through degrading treatment by students who felt they were superior to them. Yet the notion that bullying may have caused the massacre at Columbine High School is a chilling one, as it lessens the blame of the attack on the perpetrators themselves and further increases it on the students who actually bullied them as well as on the school officials who did nothing to discourage it. Advertisement Is A Perfect Example Of Postmodernism...

The ‘Dove Evolution’ advertisement is a perfect example of postmodernism advertising and complements the above discussion of hyper reality. The advertisement presents the full process in creating a billboard worthy advertisement. Firstly, the segment provides a behind-the-scenes look at how the model is, essentially ‘created’, and shows the audience how the ‘original’ image becomes the final product, unlike modernist advertisements which just presents an already final and ‘beautiful’ product. Emphasis on the use of photo-shop illustrates how technology has become a tool in modern day advertising and highlights Baudrillard’s (1994) view that the people of today live in an ‘unreal’ and fake world. Filming and disseminating this process â€Å"allows us to live without the illusions that modernity dangled before us† (Hart pg 9) The background classical music that has been slightly distorted illustrates Hartâ €™s (2004) belief that â€Å"Postmodernism takes what it likes from high culture (classical music) and puts it to work in popular culture (advertising)† (Pg 8, Hart, 2004), further illustrating the idea that postmodernism involves removing â€Å"things out of their contexts, fragmenting them†¦and, well, playing with them† (pg 8, Hart, 2004). The final cut shows the billboard up, without showing the process of how that image came to be, reiterating Mills (1956) argument that the public would be unable to tell that it is a hyper-real image. Advantages of Being Bilingual Free Essays

Abstract This essay deliberates the benefits of being bilingual. The information has been analyzed from resources dating from September 2010 through 2012. The idea put forth in this essay is to prove that the brain of a bilingual person is agile and nimble. We will write a custom essay sample on Advantages of Being Bilingual or any similar topic only for you Order Now It argues a bilingual signs in babies having the ability to distinguish between two languages as young as 4 months old. It also presents how infants show a strong preference for the language their mother spoke during pregnancy. It confirms that using two languages throughout life delays the onset of dementia symptoms by an average of four years. The research further explores how bilingualism is positively connected with many cognitive outcomes, including: metalinguistic awareness, focus attention, auto control, active memory, and abstract and symbolic representation skills. In general, bilingual speakers enjoy far nimbler cognitive commands, maintaining a continuously active and alert brain, even when only one language is in control. Being bilingual actually provides opportunities in many corners of life totally impossible for monolinguals speakers. Advantages of Being Bilingual The saying â€Å"less is more,† does not apply when the topic of monolingual versus bilingual language skills is concerned. This work is a recompilation of the advantages of being bilingual. It discusses how the brain of bilingual speakers is ingenious and clever. Moreover, extends how infants as young as 4-months old and children who live in bilingual environments have advantages over those living in monolingual environments. The article presents how using two languages throughout life delays the onset of dementia symptoms by an average of four years. This essay proves, through a number of studies, the cognitive outcomes associated with bilingualism. According to Flora (2010): Infants as young as 4 months who live in bilingual environments can distinguish between two languages, monitoring lip and facial movements. Babies also show a strong preference for the language their mother spoke during pregnancy. We’re built to acquire language, of course, but we’re also built to learn and accommodate more than one. Monolinguals are essentially underutilized their abilities: Brain scans show that while monolinguals use established language centers such as Broca’s rea, bilinguals employ far more of the neural landscape when expressing themselves. (p. 75). Wang (2010) uses the results of the studies performed by Dr. Bialystok and Dr. Craik (2004) on how children learn a second language. Doctor Bialystok and Craik conducted three studies that look at the cognitive effects in some 150 monolingual and bilingual people betwee n 30 and 80 years old. They found that in both middle and old age, the bilingual subjects were better able to block out distracting information than the single-language speakers in a series of computerized tests. The advantage of bilingualism was even more pronounced in the older subjects. Compared with people who speak only one language, bilingual children and young adults have slightly smaller vocabularies and are slower when performing certain verbal tasks, such as naming lists of animals or fruits. Bilingualism equally doesn’t just apply to the small percentage of people who are perfectly fluent in two tongues. In the same fashion, bilinguals might speak beautifully in one language without being able to read or write it. Moreover, they may have acquired their second tongue as a child, a teen, or an adult. Wang, (2010) affirms that: A lifetime of speaking two or more languages appears to pay off in old age, with recent research showing the symptoms of dementia can be delayed by an average of four years in bilingual people. Multilingualism doesn’t delay the onset of dementia—the brains of people who speak multiple languages still show physical signs of deterioration—but the process of speaking two or more languages appears to enable people to develop skills to better cope with the early symptoms of memory-robbing diseases, including Alzheimer’s. Over time, regularly speaking more than one language appears to strengthen skills that boost the brain called cognitive reserve, a capacity to work even when stressed or damaged. This build-up of cognitive reserve appears to help bilingual people as they age. Specifically, the advantages of bilingualism are thought to be related to a brain function known as inhibitory or cognitive control: the ability to stop paying attention to one thing and focus on something else, says Dr. Bialystok (2004). Fluent speakers of more than one language have to use this skill continually to silence one language in their minds, while communicating in another. People who are bilingual are often asked which language they think in, but when people are walking down the street, riding a bus, or jogging in the woods, their thoughts may not be in a particular language, points out Francois Grosjean, author of the research-based Bilingual Life and Reality. Parker-Jones, (2012) and his colleagues used functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) to investigate whether neuronal activation differs in bilinguals and monolinguals during picture naming and reading aloud when only one language is in use. They found that when a bilingual person names pictures or reads words aloud, in their native or nonnative language, activation was higher by the monolingual in 5 left hemisphere regions: dorsal precentral gyrus, pars triangularis, pars opercularis, superior temporal gyrus, and planum temporale. They further proved that these areas are sensitive to increasing demands on speech production in a monolingual person. This suggests that the advantage of being bilingual comes at the price of increased work in brain areas that support monolingual word processing. By comparing the effect of bilingualism across a range of tasks, they argue that activation is higher in bilingual speakers as compared with monolingual speakers because word retrieval is more demanding. Furthermore, articulation of each word, by bilingual speakers, is less rehearsed. In addition, speech output needs careful monitoring to avoid errors when competition for word choice occurs between, as well as within, language. The Parker-Jones (2012) team’s conclusions offer novel insights into the effect of bilingualism on brain function. They emphasize that the advantage of being bilingual comes at the expense of increased demands on word retrieval and articulation, even in simple picture naming and reading tasks. The Parker-Jones (2012) team also has shown images of the increased activation for bilinguals relative to monolinguals during overt picture naming and reading aloud, even when bilinguals are only responding in their native language. The areas where these effects were observed are remarkably consistent with those previously associated with low- versus high-frequency picture naming in one’s native language and the control of interference in bilinguals as they respond in a dual language context. Their findings suggest that bilinguals increase processing within a system that is also used in monolinguals (Abutalebi Green, 2007). However, they contrast sharply with the idea of a unique and helpful bilingual system that exploits resources that are untapped in monolinguals Baker and Shalinsky (2008). By including multiple tasks, they have been able to interpret the function of the areas where activation is higher in bilinguals than monolinguals. In addition, by including multiple groups, and only testing in a single language context, they were able to control for differences between native versus nonnative language. In the final analysis, attaining fluency in two or more languages not only looks fabulous like an advantage on college and job applications, it actually presents opportunities in many corners of life completely denied to the monolingual. The advantage of being bilingual now has science behind it. My research proves that the list of advantages includes, staving off dementia, improved cognitive skills, and heightened creativity. Moreover, bilingual speakers have an easier time focusing on tasks, and greater control over literacy skills which is heightened by environmental awareness. Additionally, bilinguals have an easier time switching between tasks; have denser grey matter, faster response time, and higher scores on intelligence tests. References Flora, C. (2010, October). Statement of Professional Orientation Essay Example

Statement of Professional Orientation Essay My decision to pursue a Masters degree in Social Work is motivated by powerful and unique factors, which are drawn from my professional, educational, and life experiences. I am naturally compassionate toward other people and have always been interested in supporting people and assisting them with whatever challenges and plights they face. Within the immediate circle of my friends and family, Ive always been considered a steady and considerate source of advice and help; the problems which I have helped people deal with on an intimate basis include those related to substance abuse, child-rearing, and education. Although I attained considerable experience in   helping people and in understanding their problems, it was not until I successfully aided my own step-daughter through a series of challenging crises that I determined my natural skills and interests would be better served through the pursuit of a degree. I received an undergraduate degree in Human Resource Management, a field which I found stimulating and important: however, shortly after receiving my degree, I realized that what I really want and what I feel I am truly called upon to pursue is a career through which I   can grapple with real-life problems facing real-life people and one which allows me to call upon my personal skills of compassion and understanding. While I was working on my undergrad degree, I also served as a part-time teachers-assistant   in the University City School district. My assignment was to work with three kindergarten classes which held twenty five students each. This school was racially diverse: with children of   African American, German, Russian, Bosnian, and Asian descent. In my position at the school, I had the opportunity to help troubled children. I feel that my experience in this professional capacity opened my eyes to the severity of challenges and emotional turbulence which can accompany children in crisis. My experiences with young children in crises convinced me that Social Work was not only my true calling, but probably the most noble profession in the world. My experiences also instilled within me a fierce desire to be of direct assistance to children in crisis. Because torture continues to be a severe problem all around the world, especially in countries such as Bosnia, Afghanistan, China and parts of Africa, I have come realize that taking the first step towards pursuing a Master Degree in Social Work is something I must do in order to provide the best and most direct form of help available to people, especially children. My personal goals are to help others and make a difference in the lives of the mentally ill. I have attained vast experience in dealing with diverse people and in dealing with mentally ill clients and providing therapy to those clients. My experiences in crises-intervention, in teaching, and in personal support roles to my clients, students, and to my friends and family have been the best learning experiences of my life and have caused me to become a stronger, more capable and more compassionate person. Upon completion of my Masters degree in Social Work, I plan to   to establish myself as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I would like to start my career by working with young children who suffer from mental illness.

The Autobiography of Malcolm X

The Autobiography of Malcolm X Free Online Research Papers In his book, The Autobiography of Malcolm X, Malcolm describes the racist society in the 1930’s. As a young boy the Ku Klux Klan killed Malcolm’s father. When Malcolm grew up he wanted to be a lawyer, but racism stood in his way. Later on, he goes to New York where he works in many illegal jobs such as: a hustler, robber, drug dealer, and pimp dealer. He then is sent to prison. There he learns about Islam in a wrong way. He also starts using his hustler techniques to win people and convert them. When he goes to Mecca he sees and learns the â€Å"true Islam†. He then is expelled from the Nation of Islam, which was the old organization that described Islam as an anti-white religion. As Malcolm moves from one environment to another he adapts and as he moves he names himself a couple of names such as: Detroit Red, Satan, Elhajj Malik Shabbazz, and Malcolm X. There are many symbols that show that Malcolm’s view change based on the environment surrounding him. One of the many symbols is his zoot suit, and doing a conk hairstyle when he moves to New York. When he was in New York he started to befriend pimps such as Sammy the pimp, and drug dealers and robbers such as: Shorty. He also had white girlfriend, but he uses her for status reasons. He later gets his name Detroit Red when he lives in whorehouse and starts marijuana and cocaine addiction. He then is arrested and sent to prison for ten years. As one can see the environment usually affects Malcolm. While in prison Malcolm tries to stop taking drugs. This causes him to be very frustrated, which gets him another name by his inmates: Satan. While in jail he meets Billi an educated Negro, he then starts copying and reading a dictionary. He also hears about Islam and converts. As Malcolm reads he starts to improve his English and vocabulary. He also starts to become an extremist this is evident in his saying: Yes, Im an extremist. The black race here in North America is in extremely bad condition. You show me a black man who isnt an extremist and Ill show you one who needs psychiatric attention! Once he came out of jail he buys glasses, a wristwatch, and a suitcase. These things symbolize his commitment in traveling to spread Islam, and his commitment to start an efficient career. Malcolm worked to free black people from racism at any price even his own death. He had once said: Be peaceful, be courteous, obey the law, respect everyone; but if someone puts his hand on you, send him to the cemetery. He also said: The price of freedom is death.† He also said: If youre not ready to die for it, put the word freedom out of your vocabulary. His first step was to unite all black people first. He had said that in his famous saying: â€Å"Whites can help us, but they cant join us. There can be no black/white unity, until there is first some black unity.† Later on, he believed that all oppressed people should unite. This idea is evident in his saying: The only way well get freedom for ourselves is to identify ourselves with every oppressed people in the world. We are blo od brothers to the people of Brazil, Venezuela, HaitiCuba- yes, Cuba too.† When he went to hajj to Mecca and came back he was amazed about the â€Å"colorblindness† there. He had said: I remember one night at Muzdalifa with nothing but the sky overhead, I lay awake amid sleeping Muslim brothers and I learned that pilgrims from every land every color, and class, and rank; high officials and the beggar alike all snored in the same language.† This had brought him to believe that Islam was the best solution to erase the evil of racism. This is evident in his saying: America needs to understand Islam, because this is the one religion that erases from its society the race problem.† This is what Malcolm X or Elhajj Shabbazz as he named himself. In conclusion Malcolm’s life is full of conversions, from hustler to lecturer to leader. What is pretty interesting is that his hustling skills got him to be a good leader. He had once joked by saying that he got his bachelor degree from the streets of Harlem. Once again one can see that the environment and surroundings affected Malcolm X Research Papers on The Autobiography of Malcolm XWhere Wild and West MeetThe Masque of the Red Death Room meaningsThe Effects of Illegal Immigration19 Century Society: A Deeply Divided EraCapital PunishmentMind TravelHonest Iagos Truth through DeceptionComparison: Letter from Birmingham and CritoThe Hockey GameHip-Hop is Art
